Welcome to my tropical fish stock list.

The items listed on this page represent my current stocks as of 29/08/2008

Please note that these can change very quickly. To avoid disappointment please phone or e-mail before making a special journey.

A little bit about the species I stock, and the philosophy behind my choices.
One of the most common reasons people experience problems in fishkeeping is the selection of species that are not suited to their aquarium. Some fishes may grow too large or become aggressive, while others can be difficult to feed or care for. This is something that can be avoided with a little care and research, so if in any doubt please ask. Here at Wayside I concentrate on stocking only those species that are ideal for the average home fishkeeper.

In my stock list, you will firstly notice something of a bias towards small, peaceful, plant-friendly, community fishes. These obviously make the most trouble-free aquarium inhabitants. I have also carefully selected each species with regards to its water requirements. The vast majority of aquarium owners use their local tap water in their aquariums, so I see little point in stocking species that require special water conditions. Our local tap water is very hard and alkaline, so each species here has been selected for its ability to thrive in such conditions. You may notice that some species listed do indeed come from very different conditions in the wild, but through careful selection of stock, and acclimatisation, these have proven very adaptable. All of the species I stock are also happy to eat a range of quality commercial fish foods, and do not require a highly specialist diet.

I am also very particular as to where my stocks are sourced, because this can make an enormous difference. For example you will notice many of my fish are listed as tank bred: in fact around half of all the species we stock are locally bred especially for us. Because these fish have been brought up in aquarium conditions, they are adapted to life in captivity. Coming from the local area they have not been stressed by long journeys or transitions into very different water conditions. I consider them to be far superior to the vast majority of aquarium fish available today, most of which are farmed en masse in foreign countries.

At Wayside I quarantine all imported fish for at least 14 days in the shop’s own on-site holding area, before offering them for sale. This ensures that the fishes are as healthy as possible.

Buying new stock for your aquarium.
Once you have chosen the number and species of fishes you want to keep, you need to ensure your aquarium is ready. Please make sure you have checked your water quality, or at least your ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels, before adding new stock as this is very important. Ensure you have enough room to add the right number of your chosen fish - many species either need, or alternatively dislike, the company of their own kind. I recommend an approximate stocking level of 1cm of fish per litre once the aquarium is fully mature and has been running at least six months. This is based on the total adult length of the fish, excluding tail. When stocking a brand new aquarium, remember it is essential to add the fishes over a long period. If you have any questions about adding new stock please ask me when you come in.

Please note, I do not post fishes out or send them by courier: my stock is available for collection only, during opening hours.
